This one was originally printed in Gang Bang Bong #1, in February 2010.

Around this time I was trying to do a lot of these vignette type strips about the inhabitants of two parallel but connected kingdoms called Trollmoor and Knoxtaal. I was taking a lot of hints from John Bauer's Troll illustrations and Lord of the Rings and the like. A couple of these comics exist (another one was published on vice a little while ago) but otherwise this storyline was abandoned. Maybe it's something I'll revisit someday.

Black Mass #6

The Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Festival is happening this coming weekend. Chris Kuzma, Ginette Lapalme and I are going to be tabling together as a united Wowee Zonk, selling our namesake comic book anthology and tons of other good stuff including amazing jewellery by Ginette and Kuzma's new comic book Complex #2.

Here's my contribution. This is the last issue in my ongoing series, Black Mass. I've been drawing this turd since 2008 following the exploits of misanthropic wizard-son Turdswallo Blackteeft and his noble caring roommate and best friend, Dingball. Issue #6 concludes story developed in issues #4 and #5.

This issue is debuting at the show this coming weekend, but if you're not going to make it and would like to secure a copy, you can buy it here! I'm taking "Pre-orders." The books are finished, but I will be shipping them out on December 8th 2011. All books ordered before December 8th will come packaged with one of these little trading cards I just printed.

An Earthen Head presents new work from Canadian Artist Patrick Kyle. This new collection introduces an ensemble of recurring cryptic symbols and humorous characters lumbering throughout a mysterious parallel world ruled by nomadic Proto-punks and transient apparitions spouting esoteric prophecies.

Kyle’s work marries the aesthetics of comic books, animation and cartoons and layers them with imagery from the occult, misanthropic sub-cultures and fragments from his own experiences and memories. Kyle’s wobbly-line cartoon work and crusty media layering are Lascaux-eseque in their tactility and ambiguity. An Earthen Head is the beginning of a world imagined from the ground up.

Patrick Kyle graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design in 2009 and has since exhibited work in Europe, Australia and North America. His Illustrations have appeared in The New York Times, Transworld Skateboarding, The Walrus and others. Kyle is a co-editor of the comic book anthology Wowee Zonk, which was nominated for a Doug Wright Awards in 2011. An Earthen Head is his first solo exhibition in North America.

I'm going to be at The NY Art Book Fair again this coming weekend sitting with Ryan Dodgson and Jesjit Gill. We're tabling outside in the courtyard area.

I'll be selling copies of a new zine called MANA-LEAK that I put together under my 'publisher' moniker Mother Books. It has 24 pages of new drawings by Dan Rocca, Rowan Tedge, Morgan Criger, Chris Kuzma, Ginette Lapalme and myself. It'll be available for $5 at the show.

I'm going to be at something like a dozen book fairs before the end of the year, but if you can't make it to any of them and would like to order a copy of MANA-LEAK, it should be online shortly at Mother Book's Website.

MoffToff is an arboreal Troll mischief maker who lives in the darker part of Tree Tree Woods. He may be too clever for his own good. He spends his days sitting in the tree tops throwing apples at passers by. Those who have patience can unlock his knowledge of exotic healing herbs.

SkragmMhag is a menacing Negative Wizard who lives in a Stone fortress in the barron plains of Mhaggranniann. He is often trying to extend his influence into Tree Tree Woods and harness the mystical powers of UripNip and the Baby powers of BibBib for his own gain.

GhnonBon is the General of SkragmMhag's Goblarmy. (Goblin-Army) Surprisingly, GhnonBon is the counterpoint to SkragmMhag's Negetivity and acts as an advisor and voice of reason in The Mhaggranniann Plains. He is very experienced and worldly and despite his military expertise, he always looks for alternatives to combat.

MrwagTwagg is a Troll from The Mhaggranniann Plains who acts as an ambassador to the Troaugs of Tree Tree Woods. He is well traveled, wise and is neutral to disputes. He possesses ancient magic learned hundreds of years ago.

REAL INFORMATION (Please read if ordering): Each one of these "Spirit brooches" is a little piece of original artwork by me. They're made using the same methods I use to make my illustrations and gallery work. Each one is about 3.5" x 3" in size and is essentially a piece of coated watercolour paper with a pin backing so you can tack them onto your shirt, coat, punk-vest, cardigan, tam-o-shanter or dungarees. My broken arm

I broke my arm on the way home from a meeting on Thursday. Ginette and I were biking home at the time.

I blogged about how much I liked this pbox tote bag a little while ago. I still like it despite the fact that it broke my arm. I usually carry all my junk in my backpack but on Thursday I thought it would be nice to use this tote instead. It was over my shoulder but it kept flopping around and coming loose. Eventually it fell down around my wrist and that was that. I had a fair amount of stuff in there and before I could reposition the bag it got stuck between my wheel and frame and caused my front wheel to stop entirely. I flew over the handle bars and tumbled onto the road. A woman in a parked car saw the whole thing happen and called an ambulance for me.

I'm extremely lucky I didn't land on my head or face. I didn't even bump them. I am definitely going to buy a helmet before I get back on my bike. This accident could have been much much worse, and it happened so easily. I really need to be more careful.

Thank you to the Woman in the parked car for calling the ambulance. And Thanks to Ginette who braved the horrible emergency room with me and has been taking care of me since.

I will be healed in about 6 weeks. Fortunately it's my left arm, so i'll still be able to get some work done.

Chris, Ginette and I stopped by The Beguiling for our weekly browse on Wednesday and I picked up a few books. One of them was Nazi Knife 7.

Nazi Knife is one of my favourite anthologies. The previous issues, specifically 5 and 6, were fairly sizeable perfect bound books brimming with drawing, collage and photography by some of the most enterprising image makers.

This issue takes a modest and concise turn, containing only work from 5 artists (Hendrik Hegray, Leon Sadler, CF, Mehdi Hercberg and Robert Beatty) all contributing black and white drawings. What this issue lacks in volume it makes up for in virtuosity. The work is smart, succinct, confident, imaginative; the the kind of work that makes me wish I had done it first.

During a lecture here in Toronto, CF described building this chair out of scraps of wood. It appears on the cover.

This is an inexpensive and highly enjoyable zine. I definitely recommend adding it to your library.

I just got back into my studio after having surgery on my face earlier this week. I'm still a little groggy, but i'm trying to get some work done. The following two images are of a drawing i'm working on that's going to be part of a larger series of works for an exhibition i'm having in the fall. I'll have more information about the work and the show as they develop.

This is is part of a larger drawing that i've had sitting around for quite a while. I really hate talking about what I'm "Planning" to do in the event that what I predict will actually not happen. But, I will hopefully be doing a larger narrative work based on this drawing after I finish Black Mass #6. I would really like to do something with a little more breadth and something that is not limited by how it can be reproduced.

Ginette ordered me this skull/cross necklace from Ebay. It's one of my power emblems.

Ginette also ordered me this Little Orphan Annie coffee mug from ebay. I think Harold Gray's Little Orphan Annie comics are fantastic. Annie is such a positive character, and I love that in a lot of the strips wealthy assholes get what they deserve. It's a wonderful comic. I wish the real world was more like Little Orphan Annie. I've been drinking out of this mug constantly in hopes that my wish will come true.

This is part of my Tape collection. I found this Wall Mountable tape rack in someone's trash one right while I was walking around the neighbourhood. I don't have a lot of tapes, but i'm always on the look out for quality purchases. The few i've picked up I think are golden. The River's Edge and Return of the Living Dead Soundtracks (Two of my favourite films) are outstanding. If only there was a Class of Nuke 'Em High cassette soundtrack.

My good friend Dan Rocca just updated his website. Dan is a compulsive image maker and talented drawer. He and I also play magic cards together.

I also play magic cards with a Gentleman named Nathan Enkel. He's a printmaker and super nice guy and gives me stuff for free! He gave me this shirt at TCAF! Nice One! Nate also recently gave me a copy of this Troll magic card. It's a pretty rare card to just give away! Thanks Nate!

During TCAF I also picked up an awesome tote bag from Picturebox with amazing artwork by Leon Sadler. This little guy makes me smile every time. I want to carry everything around in this bag.

A while ago I did a guest talk at Sheridan College in my friend Aaron Leighton's sketch book class. I met a student who's work I think is really spectacular. Check out these sketch book drawings from Alex Gorodskoy's site. There's 195 of them!

I updated my site with a ton of new images and added a section for my comics and animation stuff. I spend more time making comics and narrative stuff than making "fine art" and illustration. It's due time I added it to my portfolio site.

I launched this comic book last week at The Toronto Comic Arts Festival.

The fifth issue of my self-published comic book series, Black Mass. I've been making these things since 2008 and I think this is probably the best one yet. (And the nicest looking in terms of production!)

I'm in the Game Over 4 exhibition happening at Giant Robot San Francisco next month. A ton of people are in this show including a bunch of my friends. I'm really excited to be taking part. It's all video game stuff. All of my pieces are inspired by the computer game Starcraft. Here they are.

Chris Kuzma was really curious about what Starcraft was, so here's a picture from the game.

The Zerg bases are pretty gooey and drippy. They're pretty fun to draw. While searching for this image I also came across a screen shot of the game while it was in development. I wish they had released it like this!

For everyone else, here it is! I worked with Eye's new Editorial Designer Caley Tessier on this one. The Article was regarding sleeping in someone else's space while traveling.

Unrelated: I just came across this documentary about the band Hella that i'd never seen before. Hella's approach to creating really inspired me at a time where I didn't really know where I was going. I feel like their music really pushed me in a good direction and helped me understand what I was doing.

There is a lot of interesting discussion about creating and making music in this vid that i think applies to making visual art and drawing as well. There's also a section with some of the drummer Zach Hill's artwork which is really cool. Check it out.

Tomorrow is the first day of the Toronto Comic Arts Festival and i'll be there along with my Wowee Zonk bros Ginette Lapalme and Chris Kuzma.

This year the three of us curated an entire room called The Small Press Schooner. We'll be up there on the second floor with a ton of other amazing local artists. Come and Check it out! We'll have a ton of new books for sale, including our Koyama Press published "Pobody's Nurfect."

I'm going to be in a group show in Melbourne, Australia in June at No Vacancy Gallery with a ton of other amazing artists from around the world. I'll get more information about it as it becomes official. I'm doing some new stuff for it.

I had a brief radio appearance today on CIUT 89.5 in Toronto with my pals Chris Kuzma and Ginette Lapalme on Donna G's The More The Merrier Arts Program. My two collaborators, Chris Kuzma and Ginette Lapalme and I have a book coming out in the coming months!

Wowee Zonk: "Pobody's Nurfect" is a collection of work from our two exhibitions in 2009 and our installation "Spelunkin fer Culkin." Pobody's Nurfect is being published by Koyama Press.

The book will be available in Toronto in May. We will have some advanced copies available at MOCCA in New York City in early April. See you there!

My solo exhibition of work Grim Pseudonym is opening today at L.O.T.S Gallery in Stockholm, Sweden. L.O.T.S is a new part of Gallery Steinsland Berliner being curated by Svartkonst Magazine.

I am really thrilled to be involved in this show. The Guys at Svartkonst were excellent to work with and everything has gone really well so far. Unfortunately, I'm unable to attend the opening, but I can't wait to see some photographs of the work on display.

Svartkonst also produced a limited edition zine with some of the work with the show. If they don't sell out at the gallery i believe they will be for sale online after the show!

Grim Pseudonym at Steinsland Berliner in Stockholm

My Show Grim Pseudonym, curated by Svartkonst Magazine is opening within a larger exhibition of work at Gallery Steinsland Berliner in Stockholm, Sweden on February 26th 2010.

Svartkonst contacted me about contributing work in early January, and since then, i managed to finish 10 new pieces for the show. Svartkonst will be publishing a limited edition zine with some of the work from the show. It will be available for purchase online sometime after the exhibition.

In the meantime, there is an interview with me up on the Svartkonst website. Check it out!

I recently inherited 24 cassette tapes recovered from the trash by my good friend Ginette Lapalme. I have been collecting blank and semi-blank cassette tapes for some time now in hopes of one day doing some kind of musical project with them. Who knows whether i will ever get around to using them, but i'm amassing a pretty serious collection. Although they could easily be recorded over, none of the tapes recovered by Ginette are blank. They're all labeled in someone's cryptic handwriting, and i haven't had to patience to go though them yet.

Who Know, one of them could be a real gem.

Due to the recent Troll sighting on Trollton Hill there has been a lot of talk about Trolls in the media in the past few weeks. There's a bad movie called "Troll" and an even worse movie called "Troll 2" which may have mislead people to believe a lot of silly things about the nature of the Troll and where they come from. Gygax wrote:

Trolls are horrid carnivores found in nearly every clime. They are feared by most creatures, as a troll knows no fear and attacks unceasingly. Their sense of smell is very acute, their infravision is superior (90`), and their strength is very great.

Although Gygax was an avid creature analyst, his research of the troll should be regarded as purely superficial, as there is great depth to the Troll and it's demeanor. Although there is some truth behind his carnivorous claim, Gygax's assumption of horridness and aggressiveness is mostly incorrect.

Trolls live in the hills in a place called Trollmoor. It's a nice place, and there is a lot of Troll Trees and Troll rocks for the Trolls to play on. Trolls spend most of the time brewing Trollbalm in their Troll Kettles, which they carry between them on a pole. Trollbalm protects the Trolls from snakes that slither into Trollmoor from the neighbouring Knoxtaal. Trollbalm protects the Trolls from snakes, but If a human uses Trollbalm, he will turn into a Troll. Trolls brew Trollbalm so constantly that they almost always have Trollbalm on their hands, and subsequently spent a lot of time licking it off. Trolls like to wear cloaks to keep the sun off their backs and to prevent the trollbalm from curdling. Curdled Trollbalm is considered a delicacy by some elite Trolls, but generally it is discouraged. When the sun sets high in the mountains of Trollmoor, the Trolls massage the Troll Rocks with the freshest Trollbalm and they begin to glow, illuminating Trollmoor so that the Trolls can stay out all night brewing Trollbalm and gathering mud and sticks.

There is still much to learn about the Troll and his culture, but it is through this kind of observation, research and in depth analysis that we will discover the true nature of the Troll.

Readin' and Viewin' and Hearin'

I'm working on a number of new projects right now, but i'm not really far enough into any of them to really share anything significant. But, lately i've been collecting a lot of stuff to inspire me and inform my new work. Most of it is sitting infront of me on my desk, so i thought i would share some of them.

From top to bottom, Right to left:
1. Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Monster Manual.
I've never played D&D in my life, but i saw this gem being read by Stephen Lea Sheppard in an Episode of Freaks and Geeks and i had to own it. D&D seems pretty complicated. I think i'll stick to Magic The Gathering.

2. Cave Mind, Printed by Jesjit Gill, featuring various artists.
This is a really neat book, and Jesjit worked pretty diligently organizing and printing it. Awesome work. This one was a gift from my guardian angel, Anne Koyama. (As were a lot of the books shown here.)

3. Three Issues of "White Dwarf"
I picked these up for 50 cents each at The Beguiling. They're filled with lots of really awesome illustrations and gaming jargon. rad.

4. Camilla Engman The Suitcase Series.
Another Gift from Anne Koyama! This is a beautifully constructed book and it houses a number of smaller zines, including a really charming one about a Jack Russell.

5. Sturgeon White Moss #4
I picked this up because it had a Marc Bell comic that i had never read before. It's also conveniently filled with a lot of other neat comics.

6. Class of Nuke 'em High.
Amanda got me this DVD for Christmas after i rented it in early December. I don't hold a lot of films in high regard, but this one is up there with Return of the Living Dead and River's Edge.

7. Moving Plastic Castles by Tommi Musturi
I looked at this almost every time i went to the Beguiling for a long time, but never bought it. I finally Caved. I'm baffled to why i hadn't sooner.

8. The Unclothed Man in the 35th Century A.D by Dash Shaw.
I love the way Dash Shaw uses colour, and i was really impressed by some of the complex and imaginative story telling in these strips.

9. THE SMART SERVE HANDBOOK!
I work at a restaurant on Queen street, one of my co-workers lent this to me so i can determine whether someone is drunk based on their body type.

I'm listening to this right now.

Frostgrave, Hymn of the Dead. It was recorded in 1995, but was not released until 2008. If it had been released in a timely fashion, it probably would have been looked back upon as a real Black Metal Classic.

On a side note, despite a surge of post-christmas sales, i still have some prints and comics for sale. Check it out!
